The quiet workspace you get when running on the solar power is delightful! Rob was pleasant to be around and always willing to help out. Thank you Rob and King Kong for bringing us the Helios!

The Helios is a great motorhome. Not only is it energy efficient but it offers a large space for production to work in. The copy machine is great because you can wirelessly print and make color copies and send faxes. The satellite phones came in handy when we realized we didn’t have any cell service on location. We received several compliments throughout the shoot day. Crew walked into the motorhome in awe of such a beautiful space.

From hybrid cars to hybrid production trailers

Leonardo DiCaprio is reported to be getting the first Fisker Karma, a luxury plug-in hybrid sports car. He can now get a hybrid trailer to match on his next film project.

King Kong Production Trailers (KKPT)announced today that it’s making what it believes is the world’s first solar hybrid production trailer.

During an on-location test, the Helios with solar panels on its roof ran for 14 hours solely on its solar generator, according to KKPT.

The Helios will include solar panels, and both a solar generator and a biodiesel generator for on-site use.

The interior will also sport some sustainable touches with bamboo cabinetry, recycled rubber flooring, recycled glass countertops, and Forest Stewardship Council certified lumber.

What might be the most interesting feature to anyone who’s had to work near a trailer is that it may also cut down on noise pollution.

During a pilot test of a Helios on location, the trailer was able to run for 14 hours straight on its solar generator without having to use the biodiesel generator. It saved an estimated 28 gallons of fuel, according to KKPT.

World’s First Solar Hybrid Production Trailer!

Posted on October 19th, 2011 by jourdan

Working on films, I can attest that there is a lot of waste.  So when I come across people creating ways to be more green on set I’m pretty excited. When a film, commercial or whatever it may be is shooting, not too far from the action is the sea of base camp trailers housing production personnel and maybe a celebrity or two, otherwise know as “the talent.”  These trailers are powered by fuel generators and full of eco UN-friendly materials. Think about those generators running for 12-17 hours a day.  That’s a lot of waste and pollution.  But now ground has been broken for a new generation of production trailer.  King Kong Production Vehicles, Inc. introduces the world’s first solar hybrid production trailer – HELIOS – built specifically for the entertainment industry.

Helios was designed and built to fulfill all the needs of production while keeping a goal of having the least impact on the environment.  That’s two things I love coming together – film production and eco friendliness!  I knew my worlds would collide someday.

Let’s take a look at what’s inside Helios.

Solar Generator – Bio Diesel Generator – Bamboo Cabinetry – FSC Certified Lumber – Low VOC Finishes – Recycled Glass Desks & Countertops – Recycled Rubber Flooring – Solvent Free Adhesives & Formaldehyde-Free Substrate – Soy Based Foam Insulation – LED Lighting – Recycled Wall Base – Radient Heating – Recycled Water System – On Demand Hot Water

That’s not even all of it!  Click HERE for a full list of all of the green features.  Next time I have to rent a production trailer, I WANT THIS ONE!!!!!

Behold Helios, the Solar-Hybrid Hollywood Production Trailer

 by Steve Siler

When a press release starts with a headline characterizing something as “the Prius” of anything, it becomes literary tee-ball for scribes who may not be so pious about the Prius. We usually pass on such low-hanging fruit, but a new solar-hybrid production trailer dubbed Helios, “the Prius of production trailers,” is just too juicy not to snatch off the PR tree. For those outside of Hollywood, production trailers are the mobile homes of the entertainment industry, the things that provide movie stars and production crews respite from the sun during shoots.

Helios was created by King Kong Production Vehicles of Newport Beach, California. And here we thought King Kong’s environmental efforts were limited to farting kilotons of CO2 into the atmosphere after each banana binge. KKPV’s efforts, on the other hand, include the utilization of a solar generator in addition to a bio-diesel generator, as well as the installation of bamboo cabinetry, recycled-glass desks and countertops, and recycled-rubber flooring. King Kong claims there are “more than 12 additional important environmental, state-of-the-art advances that make Helios the most environmentally friendly trailer ever built,” but apparently doesn’t find them important enough to mention individually. We presume they would make the Prius proud, if in fact there was any connection to the Prius. (Toyota assures us there is not.)

Testimonials from famous Priusites such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts were not made available, probably because there aren’t any; King Kong says that the sole Helios trailer currently in use has been used as a production office, not a star trailer. King Kong does claim, however, that during one long production day recently, the solar generator alone provided all necessary power, saving 28 gallons of diesel fuel.

Speaking of diesel fuel, however green the humongous Helios trailer may be when parked, it still has to be pulled around by a diesel-swilling truck, somewhat diminishing its Prius cred. Might we suggest that task be assigned to one of Toyota’s upcoming Hino-branded hybrid commercial trucks, considered to be—you guessed it—the Prius of commercial trucks? Add regenerative trailer brakes and King Kong might as well call Helios the Priusstream.

Helios Eco Trailer: The Entertainment Industry’s First Solar Hybrid Vehicle

With so many green transportation designs out there, you’d think that an eco-friendly entertainment production trailer would already exist, but the recently released Helios Eco trailer is taking the title as the very first. Helios’s creator, King Kong Production Vehicles, claims that it the world’s first solar hybrid production trailer.

The company, which provides trailers and motor homes to the entertainment industry, calls the Helios Eco trailer the “Prius of production trailers,” stating in its press release that the trailer is the most advanced eco-friendly trailer with the least impact on the environment. It boasts a stream of green design elements currently not available in other production trailers, including solar panels, cabinets made of bamboo, FSC-certified lumber, recycled-content glass desks and countertops and recycled rubber floors as well as a bio-diesel generator.

King Kong Production Vehicles worked closely with Mobile Solar power to build and use solar power generators, which saved the trailer about 28 gallons of fuel on location. The trailer was able to run for 14 hours without the use of a generator or other fuel.
